De Palestijns-Israëlische schrijver-journalist Sayed Kashua maakte een tv-serie met personages die zich tot het uiterste proberen te handhaven in het niemandsland tussen twee volledig gescheiden werelden. De vaak cynische humor heeft Kashua in Israël geliefd gemaakt – maar dient vooral zijn eigen angst te neutraliseren. "Ik voorzie een grote ramp."
Je zou hem rust gunnen, een gemakkelijk leventje. Kijk naar Sayed Kashua, zijn voorovergebogen rug, zijn zoekende ogen, zijn handen die voortdurend tasten naar iets om mee te spelen. Luister ook naar zijn sarcastische grappen, soms vilein, soms snoeihard, waarin hij niemand spaart – ook zijn vrouw niet. Dit is een getergde man, die slecht slaapt en geen geheim maakt van zijn drinkgedrag. “Geluk, wat is nu geluk?” zegt hij. “Ja, twee biertjes in mijn café, dat ervaar ik als geluk. De rest is puur overleven.”
Avoda Aravit
De Palestijns-Israëlische Sayed Kashua (35) lijkt in niets op de gevierde schrijver en televisiemaker die ik me vooraf van hem voorstelde. Zijn wekelijkse column in de links-liberale krant Ha’aretz, zijn romans en zijn immens succesvolle sitcom Avoda Aravit (Arabische arbeid) op de Israëlische televisie hebben van hem een beroemdheid gemaakt. De hoofdpersonages in zijn werk zijn gespleten mensen – ze lijken sprekend op hemzelf. Kashua werd geboren in een islamitisch gezin in de Palestijns-Israëlische plaats Tira, bezocht een joodse school in Jeruzalem, studeerde aan de Hebreeuwse Universiteit van Jeruzalem en schrijft over de onverenigbaarheid van twee werelden die hij zo goed kent: de Palestijnse en Joods-Israëlische.
Voor Joodse Israëliërs biedt Kashua een venster op de Palestijnse wereld, waar ze in het dagelijks leven vrijwel niet mee in contact komen. Avoda Aravit werd de afgelopen maanden voor het tweede seizoen op primetime uitgezonden. De titel is een Hebreeuwse woordgrap. Hij lijkt op 'Avoda Ivrit' (joodse arbeid), een bekende zionistische slogan uit de beginjaren van Israël. Het is een politiek incorrecte sitcom, grotendeels in het Arabisch gesproken.
De hoofdpersoon, de Palestijns-Israëlische journalist Amjad, is zichtbaar gemodelleerd naar Kashua zelf. Amjad woont in een Palestijns dorp, gaat om met de links-liberale elite in Israël en probeert bij beide werelden aansluiting te vinden. Dit mislukt hopeloos. Kashua: “Amjad is een tragische figuur. Hij wil een normaal, rustig leven voor zichzelf, zijn vrouw en zijn dochtertje. Net als ik verlaat hij Oost-Jeruzalem om het in West-Jeruzalem te proberen. Hij doet alles om het respect van zijn Joodse vrienden te winnen. Hij viert de Israëlische onafhankelijkheidsdag Jom Ha’atsmaoet – een zwaar beladen dag voor Palestijnen, die juist spreken van Al Nakba (de ramp). Hij doet mee aan een burgerwacht in zijn buurt, maar ontmoet onbegrip en tegenwerking. Zijn vader beschuldigt hem soms van verraad. Joodse vrienden laten hem vallen.”
Verlossende grap
In de eerste aflevering van Avoda Aravit ruilt Amjad zijn Subaru in voor een Rover. Subaru’s, dat weet iedereen, zijn rammelbakken voor Palestijnen. Die geven alleen maar problemen bij militaire controleposten. Met zijn Rover wordt Amjad meteen doorgelaten – met een zwierige buiging van de Israëlische soldaat. Maar na een dag komt de Rover kuchend tot stilstand. Kashua: “In mijn televisiewerk zoek ik altijd naar een verlossende grap.”
De schrijver vertelt over een aflevering die binnenkort te zien is. Fotograaf Meir, een Joodse vriend van Amjad, moet vechten in de Gazastrook. Hij houdt dat geheim voor zijn Palestijns-Israëlische vriendin en zegt dat hij foto’s moet maken. “In deze aflevering worden foto’s vertoond van gedode Palestijnse kinderen. Dat is ongekend in Israël. Ook maak ik me zorgen dat mensen zeggen: hij maakt grappen over de Gazaoorlog. Door het succes van de serie worden de grappen ook zwaarder opgevat.”
Achter de lach van Kashua schuilt een angst, die gaandeweg ons gesprek ter sprake komt. “Mijn personages zijn alleen maar bang. Ze zoeken naar veiligheid, een zeker bestaan. Dat is een illusie, maar daar willen ze niet aan. Ze blijven het proberen.”
Angst is een taboe
Angst, zegt Kashua, is een taboe, zowel onder Israëliërs als onder Palestijnen. “Mijn vader zegt het ook [Kashua zet een zware stem op]: ‘We moeten stérk zijn, Sayed! Als we onze angsten laten zien, winnen we het nooit!’” Zijn alter ego Amjad wordt in Avoda Aravit nerveus als hij Israëlische controleposten nadert. Hij bergt zijn Arabischtalige cd’s op en zegt tegen zijn dochter dat ze de officier in het Hebreeuws moet groeten. Het meisje heeft de boodschap maar half begrepen en groet de soldaat met het Arabische sabah al khair (goedemorgen). Kashua: “Door er een grap van te maken, neutraliseer ik mijn eigen angst. In werkelijkheid vind ik zo’n plek zo eng dat ik die altijd mijd.”
De schrijver is zich bewust van zijn volstrekt unieke positie in de Israëlische samenleving. Lezers en televisiekijkers adoreren hem om zijn zelfspot en sarcasme. Maar de paradox van Kashua is dat zijn zelfgekozen isolement hem een spreekbuis maakt. “Mijn personage Amjad,” zegt Kashua, “gaat hetzelfde proces door dat ik nu meemaak. Hij wordt steeds vaker gevraagd om in talkshows op te treden, hij wordt de knuffel-Arabier van de Israëlische media-elite. [Met gewichtige stem:] ‘Amjad, vertel nog eens over de discriminatie van Palestijnen.’ Hij wordt een ster, maar tegelijkertijd heeft hij het gevoel dat hij niets te vertellen heeft. Daarom heb ik nu een aflevering geschreven waarin hij deelneemt aan Big Brother, het symbool van de leegte van het sterrendom.”
De vraag blijft, zegt Kashua, wat zijn verhalen uitmaken. Hij geeft lucht aan zijn eenzaamheid, hij neemt vooroordelen weg door ze over the top te bevestigen. Maar Kashua zit niet te wachten op de rol die hem steeds meer wordt toebedeeld: de menselijke stem in een onmenselijk conflict. Kashua wil, uiteindelijk, alleen maar vluchten. “We gaan hier niet uitkomen, ik voorzie een grote ramp voor de Palestijnen. En dan de buitenwereld. Israël gaat Iran aanvallen, vrees ik. Ik zie alleen rampspoed. Ik schreef laatst: het liefst zou ik een eiland kopen en daar een kasteel voor mijn familie bouwen. Emigreren is een tweede, misschien beter uitvoerbare optie."

I love everything that Kashua has wiettrn, yes his books are in English, and his column in Ha Aretz is in the English version of the newspaper. He's a remarkable young Israeli. His television series is brilliant , truthful and makes me laugh aloud. Very much like Seinfeld's observations of humanity, funny and at times, painful.

I am happy to even distinguish between 'jewish' and 'hebrew' culture, the first being what we see in the US. and the second in Israel. The two, mind you, are not the same, as they have diverged in the course of the past 60 years, and are diverging ever faster, as we speak. I see great positive in jewish americans following their hearts and minds and bringing their traditions and culture into main stream US, which has, by and large, been an enriching experience for both. Intermarriage in the US has been a complicated but mostly a highly positive experience, with at least as many non-jewish people coming to see jewish values as universally relevant, and even converting, as those who grew distant from judaism. I say those who abandoned judaism altogether would have done so no matter who they chose to marry, as this is a common dynamic in america among all culturally distinct groups.
