Moreel baken op de Balkan

Xhabir Derala is schrijver in Macedonië. Hij is van gemengde etnische achtergrond, maar weigert partij te kiezen. Voor Derala lopen grenzen altijd daar waar je ze zelf trekt.
Het was april 1999. NAVO-vliegtuigen vlogen over Skopje, de hoofdstad van Macedonië, om het Joegoslavië van Slobodan Milošević te bombarderen. Ik zat met schrijver-journalist Xhabir Derala bier te drinken op het terras van café Medium. Voor mij was dat het begin van een zoektocht over de Balkan die tot op de dag van vandaag voortduurt. Xhabir was mijn gids, en in zekere zin is hij dat nog steeds. Zelf is hij van gemengde etnische achtergrond. Zoiets doet ertoe op de Balkan.
En dat geldt zeker voor Macedonië: een van de meest etnisch gemengde landen van Europa, met alle verdeeldheid die dat met zich meebrengt. Xhabir weigerde destijds partij te kiezen en dat weigert hij nog steeds. Voor veel mensen is dat een teken van zwakte, voor mij een teken van kracht. Op de Balkan tenminste. Hij ontleent zijn eigenwaarde niet aan het feit dat er Albanees, Turks en Kroatisch bloed door zijn aderen stroomt. Hij houdt er meer universele waarden op na. Sommigen in zijn land zien dat als verraad aan de eigen stam.
Derala is door diepe dalen gegaan, op allerlei gebieden – persoonlijk en professioneel –, en ik heb er een flink deel van meegemaakt. Van de journalistiek belandde hij in de business van non-gouvernementele organisaties (ngo’s), een wereld van donoren, projectvoorstellen, rondetafelconferenties en financiële verantwoordingen. Een wereld die vaak net zo verrot is als de corrupte, de door vriendjespolitiek en onderdrukking van (politieke) tegenstanders gekenmerkte officiële macht die men zegt te controleren. En toch is Xhabir gebleven wie hij was: een vriend en een moreel baken in een tot op het bot verdeeld gebied.

I agree that a lot of quiltmaking dencsiois take place in your gut. However, many of us, when our gut tells us something is not right, are not sure what to do next. Telling us why you made your choices helps. In this post, you mentioned that the deer has straight edges to fit with the quilt. I think that is an idea that not everyone would have thought of. Also, your comment about getting some yellow into the bottom half of the quilt was interesting. I hear what you are saying, but that is not how I feel. On my end it is kind of like<a href="http://dqfgwk.com"> hinngag</a> out with a friend in the studio, going along for the ride. It is cool to see your thought/choice process -what gets rejected and what stays. I think it can also make us more conscious of our own process. Many artistic people are harsh on themselves, so hesitant and unsure, certain that all of the other artists are firm in what they do, how they create the vision and feeling they hold glowing inside of them. I think the process pledge helps that see that others have struggles, too. When people create in the studio with me and see my struggles, some of them feel more sure, or at least more okay with their own stumbling process. I also love to see what your studio looks like. I love your committement to your art, to color, to creating those colors. I too love to dye fabric, quilt, etc. But with two jobs, two kids in sports and the need to be a wife, too, I cannot create as often.They eye candy I get on other sites, like your own, sometimes has to fill that need. KD Borek is definitely Turkish in oriign (like most Balkan food), and the way they do it here is in that tradition. Macedonian burek is in my opinion the best of the Balkan bureks Balkan Fresh Burek near Preston market. Garry every time we visit Melbourne from Brissy we take home a bunch of Boreks from Vic Markets.
